Description

Our Celestial Map Coptic-Bound Journals richly illustrate zodiac constellations of the northern and southern celestial hemispheres in full, rich color with cover art featuring incredible reproductions from an original work entitled Planisphaerium Coeleste, created by the prolific Dutch map engraver, publisher, and artist Frederick de Wit (more about him below).

About the “Lay-Flat” Coptic Binding Method
If you have never seen coptic binding, it is an amzing feat of human ingenuity. Ideal for writing or drawing, coptic bindings lay perfectly flat when fully open, without any force or damage to the book.

Introduced more than 2000 years ago during the 4th century A.D. in ancient Egypt by the Copts and followers of the Christian Coptic Church, it is an unique-looking, hand-stitched method that uses no adhesives, and yet it produces a more durable binding standard, modern techniques that rely on adhesives and machine sewing.

Coptic stitching uses separate threads in pairs or groups. Smooth, waxed linen threads are used to group series of pages into signatures. While this is common to most methods of bookmaking, coptic signatures are not cinched too tightly, and use roughly 10 times more thread, so pages are held firmly but gently.

More About the Celestial Map Coptic-Bound Journals’ Fabulous Cover Artwork
The maps of Frederick de Wit (1630-1706) are as much sought after today for their provocative beauty and rich imagery as they were revered and respected in the 17th century for their elaborate detail.

The outer borders of the Celestial Map Coptic-Bound Journals’ front and back covers are decorated with six inset diagrams showing the planetary models of: Tycho Brahe (Hypothesis Tychonica), Claudius Ptolemaeus (Hypothesis Ptolemaica), and Nicolaus Copernicus (Hypothesis Copernicana); as well as the Illumination of the Moon by the Sun (Illuminatio Luna), the Revolution of the Earth Around the Sun (Astus Maris per Motum Luna), and the Effect of the Moon on Tides (Motus Terra Annui Circa Solem).
